Today we looked at the component parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. You need to learn all parts of the spectrum, what the sources are, what is used to detect them and what they are used for. You will find a page here that will help. You do not need to remember any of the numbers but you do need to know the order in terms of increasing and decreasing frequency and wavelength.

Today was a demonstration day looking at waves on a ripple tank. The results were mixed. Some effects were very clear such as the interference patterns produced when two waves meet and some were less obvious such as the refraction. It was visible but not spectacular. Now that Jack is the only person who has not yet returned we need to keep him up to speed until he does. Any help with this wiki will be appreciated. Jack could you please send me a messge to confirm that you are using the wiki and trying to keep up to date.

Today we did an experiment to establish the relationship between the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction when light passes through a plastic semi-circular block.
Several angles of incidence and the corresponding angle of refraction were measured and it appears when you look at them that there is no relationship. As the angle of incidence increases the angle of refraction also increases but it is not in even amounts. You can see our experimental results here.
Please someone in the class add your experimental results (thankyou now done) to the table so that those not in class can do the calculations and plot their own graph. Thanks.

Look below at the entry for 20th March. Your task for this week is to make sure you know all about waves under the topics listed. Follow the links to the waves page and use your text book or other resources to find out about the various characteristics of waves. Dont wait for me to update the pages. This is a wiki. YOU do it. I am really disappointed in the response to this. I want contributions from everyone. WE WILL NOT BE GOING OVER THIS TOPIC WHEN YOU RETURN. There is no time for that. You MUST ask questions about things you dont understand.

OK guys the challenge is on. Do you have what it takes? I would like you to follow this link to our revision wiki where WE will make a complete revision site for the first topic. YOU can make pages, evaluate what each other has done and agree on what is good. I would like to see links to extension material and historical information that enriches our knowledge and puts us one step ahead of the rest. Mrs Moffat thinks she has the best page on the site but she created it and, to be perfectly honest, it's pretty ordinary. I want US to have the best page and I feel sure it will be the best because YOU created it. So come on lets get wikki-ing. I think only one person can edit each page at one time so we will need to make lots of pages with links. I want pictures, I want explanations, I want all singing all dancing. Well I surely am glad I took the trouble to upload those questions. The TWO people who bothered to do the work did very well. What are the rest of you doing? The current situation in Bharain will not change the date of your examinations! We MUST stay focussed and get through the work.

OK today we start on the waves section. It is chapter 11 if you have your textbook. If not then find out about waves. I have started a Waves Page where you can start work. Let's build this part of our revision wiki as we are learning it. And thast means YOU, yes, I am looking at YOU, no point in looking around the room, it's YOU. Ok onwards to the Waves Page

Finish reading anything left on electricity and then read on to the next section on waves and attempt any questions. I have returned temporarily to Scotland and I dont have my textbook. I will tidy up the loose ends of electricity and then issue more meaningful instructions as soon as I get my hands on a copy of the text book. Yes I know I should have had the CD with me. Keep safe and hopefully we will be back at school soon.

Series and parallel Circuits

27 February

Definitions:

A series circuit is one where there is only one pathway around the circuit. There is nowhere that the electricity has a choice.
A parallel circit is one where there is more than one pathway around the circuit. There IS somewhere that the electricity has a choice.

Circuit Symbols

The following circuit symbols must be learned. There will be a test coming up only on these symbols. If it is in class it will be without reference to any materials. If it is online it will be seriously time limited so that you dont have time to look up the answers. You will only get a few seconds per question so get learning and be ready for the test. There are 30 Symbols to be learned.

We will be covering series and parallel circuits in the next few lessons. If you have your text book you should be working on Pages 77 to the end of the chapter. Make sure you understand the differences between the two types of circuit and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Study also voltage and current in series and parallel circuits.

After that its Ohm's Law summarised by the formula Voltage = Current x Resistance (V = I R) Make sure you understand what each of the symbols in the formula represents and try the practice questions in the booklet on my webite www.spittal.me.uk
